Starling - Sturnus vulgaris
New haircut? A Starling - Sturnus vulgaris, The punk rockers of the bird world! This chap was looking, but not quite in the right direction, I think he was more interested in what his chums were getting up to on the bird table, hoping they would leave some for him. .

And getting rarer too! This is a lovely shot Ellie. I often go birdwatching but never attempt to photograph them. I suspect I haven't got your patience
Ellie: Are they really? That's a surprise, with all the pictures people take of the flocks wheeling in the sky. Do on, click the button now and then, you'll get hooked.
Stunning colors. I love the background too. A favorite for me. Excellent composition and title Ellie!
Ellie: Thanks Jen, the background is a willow tree with the leaves just starting to appear.
We get a squadron of these screaming into our garden periodically. This guy looks like the Squadron Leader. Hey Ellie ... I'm good at this airforce jargon aint I. ;-)richard
Ellie: Gosh, a whole squadron! (See, I can speak air force too)
Lucky you ... err, no, perhaps not, it's hard enough keeping up with the appetites of the half dozen that visit us regularly.
Another poser, you might have to pay sitters fees at this rate. What a lovely shot - was this through the window as well as it seems much clearer than the first ones
No.....just the newest gel from my friend, love the proud fella, no fooling around here with him, great DOF, excellent job again here Ellie.
Certainly keeping one eye on the lady with the big black eye...perhaps a threat, perhaps an opportunity for a snack handout!
Nice details ... And he seems to be so proud being captured !!!
Or maybe he was looking at yesterday's bird, Ellie, whose head was tilted towards his.
Stunning shot !!
He is showing his best side.
What a wonderful coloured bird, great capture. The Starling of Australia (imported from England) just after the first fleet, are black with yellow legs.not as good as this beauty.
Ellie: Well, I didn't know that - something else I've learned today
This really is a great shot, nice dof, would have liked to see more of the branch though.
Ellie: Really, honestly, you wouldn't have liked to see more because it's got bits of string for things hanging and wire to attach it to the bird table. Just out of shot to the left is the bird table.
Fantastic shot Ellie. He looks very sure of himself.
This is terrific, Ellie. Great composition, detail, and color, all topped off by the funny, quizzical attitude of your darling subject.
Your certainly putting up a good set of bird shots Ellie, this is great and again you have a very interesting, unobtrusive background.
Ellie: It's a willow tree in the background Brian, lovely colour at this time of year
It is interesting how different the character of these bird portraits is. This one looks uptight and mildly disapproving.
Lovely capture Ellie. I love the expression!
Hi Elly,
Lovely Shot! But One Question: How did u capture this? U went close to the object? Regards, Kavita
Ellie: Our bird table is close to the house, when I have time I set the camera on a tripod indoors and see what visits the bird table to have something to eat. The branch is attached to underneath the table, makes a handy perch for visitors.
Ellie, what an excellent capture ! DOF is here perfect and its colours suits so well. I like its attitude ! Well done Ellie !
Real characters. One of my favourite observations was after lunch break at school when mum and fledglings would come down to the playground to feed on after lunch scraps. The fledglings would insistently demand feeding even though they were almost fully grown. It was an event that repeated every year. If I mentioned it to the kids they would have NO idea what I was talking about - and regrettably often very little interest!
An amazing shot and the colours are beautiful. Nice one
Another good picture Ellie. They are entertaining birds..if noisy!
I liked it when the bird was leaning the other way better - but this is an endearing shot too!
Ellie: I've got a few pictures of the starlings, I'l have a look to see if one of them will be looking the other way
very expressive attitutde
I have always problems with catching the eye detail of the vulgaris. It is always as if they are hiding it. This is an excellent picture.
I like this a lot. He has such a lively inquisitive look to him.
Wow, I'm very impressed with your wildlife skills Ellie. Really really good.
Very well done, could be in a book !
