St Cross, Winchester

Brethren's Hall

This is the doorway to the 14th Century Brethren's Hall at The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty is at Winchester, which "... stands on the north side of the quadrangle, and is a portion only of the old "Hundred Mennes Hall"; but enough is left to enable one to form a good idea of the original apartment, which measured 36 feet by 24 feet, until a portion was cut off to provide rooms for the Master, who is now lodged in a modern dwelling outside the gates." (Taken from The Project Gutenberg EBook of Winchester, by Sidney Heath)

St Cross is a charitable institution, it is the oldest in the UK. St Cross is non-secular, the residents are lay-people drawn from the community. It receives no support from central government, and depends entirely on day to day donations. If you would like to offer financial support please look here  http://www.stcross.f2s.com/howhelp.htm for more information.

If you like what you see, perhaps you would like to donate to the charity. Every penny helps.
