Sika Deer
Stag and ..... Last Sunday, when we went for a walk in the New Forest near Beaulieu, we saw a group of Sika Deer. (*edit 01/02/08 - At first incorrectly identified as Red Deer). It's the first time I've ever seen these deer in the wild. I'm indulging myself this week and will be posting a picture of these beautiful animals each day until Saturday. All the pictures were taken with my Olympus E-400 and the 'kit' 40-150 mm lens. This is the Stag that was in my first picture. He looked intently at us for some time. In my other shots I can see he gradually extends his neck as he catches our scent, but this one is where he's quite relaxed. I like the way this picture clearly shows his facial markings, which are so useful for identification. I've chosen this out of all those I took of him because, if you look behind the centre of his antlers you can see a grey squirrel. When I was editing the thumbnails I could see something had moved, just behind his head - it was the squirrel, I presume it was recovering buried acorns. .

What a graceful creature. He looks right at home, as he should, of course.
It is good to see a closeup of one like this. The forest almost looks artificial with all that moss and gnarled branches. You like in a very pretty place.
Ellie: It's all real Martin, I assure you. I also have to admit that we tend to take it for granted. I ought to try to share more of this area with others here on Shutterchance.
Ellie,
I have this sneaking suspicion that you are personal friends with these beautiful red deer. I love all of these pictures you've taken of them. I love how you've framed this picture too. What a beauty this stag is!
Ellie: He's a wonderful creature. I can't claim any friendship, and there were no bribes-for-photos either
majestic! He must have scotish blood! mal
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this shot, Ellie! Bravo! Excellent capture and find! I can't believe you managed to get this close to them! Amazing. I think I would have been shaking with excitement and would have blurred the shot. Great job, Ellie!!!
Ahhh...there's a hansom buck. Bet all the girls go CRAZY for his antlers!
Wow. Give him a rate card!
He looks like the king of this forest!
Superb shot! I invite you in my photoblog. I put you a pair of youg american gooses. I hope you enjoy.
What a proud creature, Ellie! You have done him proud (this HART of the forest)...and me, too. My namesake if there ever was one!
I like the whimsy of catching the squirrel within the scope of his antlers. You couldn't have staged that if you had tried!
Wow ! Lucky you, so scarce to see them wild ! Good job Ellie !
Nice framing, Ellie. He seem to be very curious about you...
That is a beauty. He looks so proud
I am just stunned that you saw this in his natural habitat. What a gift. Nice you had your camera with you so you could share the experience with us.
Superb shot Ellie . Great framing. He seems to look at you with curiosity
The only way I could do this is to sell my soul to the Devil and I think I have done that already. this is great. how do you get so close. all I get close to is dogs and they normaly want to inflict some sort of pain on me. I am jealous of this kind of shot. A joy to look at such a noble animal
Ellie: No need to sell your soul Mick. I've been assured (since taking these pictures) that early morning or later afternoon in 'the right place' is apparently the best time to see deer.
This is some proud Hart, those antlers are shining, I still think you are the most fortunated of us all to capture him, this is one shot out of a million, I love the scene around him, the moss looks so nice in the background, breathtaken Ellie, a deep bow to you.
This is a cracking shot Ellie. Magnificent creature. This is going in my likeys
I'm so pleased Ellie, to see this handsome fellow up close.
Bonus the little squirrel behind him.
A lovely range of colours and a striking pose.
So proud - his stance is one of caution and readiness.
Excellent composition.
Love this shot, Ellie. Again, the woods are the main game.
Wonderful portrait. A nice compliment to the herd photos.
Noble looking deer...looks like it should be on a Scotch bottle label
Splendid Ellie !
Wonderful Ellie and the grey squirrel in there too. Lovely shot.
oh qu'il est beau ! splendide
Well captured Ellie, a fine shot of a splendid beast.
Wonderful shots Ellie! This is with the 70-300mm? You'e captures some wonderful wildlife images -- I think the best I've ever done has been a raccoon (oh, and a pigeon or two!)
What a touching photograph, you really let me share the moment you saw this, unique! I like also the environment of fallen trees and branches covered with moss. its green works beautifully in the picture. Thanks you very much Ellie!
Hi Ellie, so, I've done what I should have done days ago and visited your blog! This picture makes me want to visit the New Forest right away - I've not been there since I was a child. I love the browns and the greens in this one - and that look from the stag is just like the reaction I got from the deer I photographed at Margam. Mike
He is one proud animal, and rightly so. love the wood in the fg too, it helps to frame him.
