Salisbury Cathedral

The Salisbury Font

A very modern and truly amazing bronze sculpture by - William Pye -. Donated to the Cathedral by Sir Christopher and Lady Benson and - The Jerusalem Trust - .

The font was dedicated on 28th September 2008 by the Archbishop of Canterbury during the Cathedral's 750th anniversary weekend.

In each of the curved sections is text, phrases from Isaiah 43:2-3

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you,
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.

I could have stayed looking at this all day, it's something that 'shouldn't fit in' with the 13th Century mediaeval architecture, but it does. It's perfect, it's awe-inspiring, it's innovative and slightly puzzling too, so it makes you think - not least about how moving water has a perfectly still surface. Creating something like this is a gift, it isn't something that can be learned.
