Robin - Erithacus rubecula
This is our Robin, Erithacus rubecula. I think this is the male of the pair we have in our garden. He's quite a feisty little chap and will challenge any of the other small birds who dare to visit "his" bird table - which he defends in much the same way as folklore says they'll defend a Spindle Tree during the winter. Robins each have their own territory during the winter, in spring they pair up and share their space. I presume doubling the area where they are able to get food for their young. This little fellow is looking up at the bird table, working out how to get onto the cage containing the fat balls. It would have been a nicer picture if there'd been a catchlight in his eye, I tried 'shopping one in, but it didn't look right. .

Great shot, really love this pose, almost as if showing off i think. I try putting seeds out for the birds but cant attract them, yet the fields behind me are swarming with the little critters, maybe i need to make a hide up there to get more shots like this, well done.
Ellie: Once the fields are empty of seeds there'll be nothing for your local birds. Try hanging fat/seed balls in a wire cage - you can make them yourself, there's a picture of one

You're just showing off now!
Ellie: Not really, just another lucky shot
just great! mal
Ellie: Ta Mal
excellent shot, ellie. great composition. luvly subject.
he's a dreamer, or just fell in love.
Ellie: Oh he's in love alright, he's a happy chap and always hungry too!
Very fine bird portrait, Ellie.
Ellie: Thanks Ray
Cute little bugger.
Aw.. that is so sweet. I like the pose even - probably wondering what's that big shiny tube being pointed at me. Really fabulous capture.
It's just amazing, Ellie, to see how much personality these birds have and that you've been able to capture it. I'm sure you're ready to give them all names, if you haven't done so already!
Ellie: No, that's something I haven't done Ginnie, never really thought of calling them more than "Robin" or "Mrs Robin". They do have a personality though, you're absolutely right
What a wonderful pose. You can't help loving Robins even though they are right little thugs really
Ellie: Only thugs to birds smaller than themselves, they run a mile when they see a Blackbird coming!
simply great Ellie - love the pose
Ellie, you caught a great pose there! Love the lighting hitting top right on his lovely red breast. Know what you mean about trying to put in a `catchlight` - I have tried myself and never manage to make it look natural. (:o)
Robin poses like a real model... ;-)
My favourite bird - there's always one around when you're out doing the gardening. Great shot - he looks really cheeky.

This is brilliant Ellie ! great composition to !
This is brilliant Ellie ! great composition to !
Wonderful bird's portrait Ellie. I like the lighting here!
You have caught him just right with his inquisitive pose, nice one Ellie.
Ellie: I was very lucky too, all the others that day were blurry!
Outstanding, you are the best in taking these kind of shots, impressive.
He seems to be wondering what kind of bird is your camera ... Too cute !!!
We don't have this bird either. We have the American robin andh here's a link to one in my garden:

That is a remarkable photograph, Ellie. congratulations.
Great shot,Lovely pose.
Que bonito, Ellie. WOW! Great capture! Bravo!
Very very good photo Ellie
He's just fine as he is, Ellie! Reading your notes now and seeing the angle of hos head, I can now see what he's got on his mind. A lovely composition with just the right amount of space around him.
Another terrific bird capture Ellie.
I have used the clone stamp to put the catchlight in. Look for a spot in the pic that looks the right shade/brightness, adjust brush size to suit and clone in.
A smashing shot indeed Ellie, even without any catchlight, well done.
Nicely caught and well composed.
Ferdi is right - the bird and picture composition is brilliant. About the catchlight - I think the sun was not shining at the time. In that case the cloned catchlight may look unnatural. Second - birds with black eyes are difficult, especially if they have black feathers as well. You are showing a black eye of the robin and my recommendation is to leave it as is.
Ellie: Sun? Louis, we don't have sun here any more, just clouds and rain! - So, no catchlights. You know me and processing, I still hate it.
You could not have taken a more perfect photo if he's actually posed on purpose! Great photo!!
That is SUCH a brilliant shot. We LOVE these little guys and there's two who visit our garden regularly, but I can never get them to stay still long enough to get a shot off.
Ellie: You could try superglue! Actually, you need a quite fast shutterspeed, and a fair bit of patience too, also be willing to throw away a good proportion of your pictures because they'll be rubbish!
Youv'e caught another "cheeky chappie" here Ellie, you are so lucky to get such a mix of birds in garden. Love it.
beeeeautiful!
i'd've cropped a bit off the top (but that's cos i'm crop happy) well done

Ellie: Aha, you and your crops!
This shows that birds have character too...
This guy is so cute. Thanks for the info on Robins. -marybeth
cocky little thing, eh?
I see you are nearly at 400 posts. Congratulations in advance!
Ellie: Ah, well, you see, some of those aren't real posts. If I delete all the ones from 'before' I officially started the site the number would drop by quite a few, but thanks for noticing.
WOW you really have captured this robin superbly Ellie, I take my hat off to you.
A likey for me. Absolutely precious capture. The bird's pose is so whimsical.
The less photoshop (in the sense of changing a photo, not enhancing) the better, that's what I always say...
It's beautiful just the way it is, an amazing photo... Are you sure you're not going to publish these marvellous bird shots of yours?
Ellie: I'm inclined to agree with your Carla, but it does depend on both the photographer and the picture. No, no publishing, at least not as far as I know.
Hey Ellie,
Sorry it's been a little while again. I get in these supper busy modes where I never get online to comment on photos -- something I miss doing quite a lot! This is a great picture. The tilted head and the curious look you are getting are priceless
Really a wonderful serie : Standing ovation !!
Ellie: You're a sweetie, thanks
Great shot Ellie!
Great shot Ellie, he looks so smart!
Lovely inquisitive bird Ellie
Awwwww, that is just precious.
Cute one Ellie. Like the curiosity of the bird as well as the way the colors blend with each other.. Gives a very cool effect..
Catchlight or not, it's a great picture. May be this bird is surprise by what the human being look like
Lovely shot ! Looks like he is scanning the skies for someone.. I love it !
Ellie! Come back! I miss my Olympus using -- Olympian? -- colleague! I hope you've been busy out taking photos and that's what's stopping you from posting
Ellie: (27 April) Aaargh, I've been distracted Iain, sorry. Hopefully more pictures very soon.
This is as cheeky a chappy as you've got in your recent archive Ellie. I seem to remember a time when you weren't so comfortable photographing our feathered friends.
You've certainly got the hang of it now.
Ellie: I'm a bit more selective too, braver about throwing away the rubbish even though I 'like' the picture. Like buses, another one will probably come along very soon. Thanks Colin
Such a funny, cute, curious little guy!
Super shot, Ellie! Perhaps your robins are calmer than the American variety where I live - I tried taking photos when they arrived at the end of winter and where feasting on dried ornamental crab apples that had fallen onto the snow. They were a blur of motion! I had no success .
Ellie: Ah, no. Our Robins are very territorial, they'll fight and scrap with any intruders, and any birds smaller than themselves. But, once settled they can be quite tolerant of people.
Try either a faster shutter speed, a higher ISO or a shallower focus and I'm sure you'll be successful
Wow! Long time no see you. Amazing shot, Ellie.
Beautiful robin. What was he looking at? Greetings from Brazil
Ellie: (27 April) Thanks Ibrahim, it's been a while since I've been on here, he's looking up at a bird feeder.
Wow!!! Very nice
100% fantastic!
Love it!
Wow, this is a stunning shot. Nice capture.
I think the bird is wondering what you are doing?
Such a cutie! Amazing capture.
What a cute little guy... and what a nice photo of him. Nicely done Ellie.
Wow! So good! So cool!!
Great catch! |
