Queen Mary 2 about to turn to pass the end of Calshot Spit and turn to the right. (Taken 22nd April 2008.) The bulbous shape of her stern is clearly visible.

It's such a pity it was so misty, because it's affected the quality of the picture, but it's easy to see how she dwarfs both the little Pilot boat and the huge red lane-marker buoy.

I haven't been able to find out how deep the navigable channel at Calshot is, but it is very close to the shore - which is quite steep, not a place for sea bathing! It then turns round the end of the Spit and then into the Solent. The majjority of ships then pass to the east of the Isle of Wight and out into the Channel.
