The Monument to the Discoveries / Padrão dos Descobrimentos at Belém, Lisbon.

This is the east side of the monument (the west 'prow' was shown yesterday) showing some of the truly amazing, and intricate detail of the carvings.

It's a stunning piece of work. Originally created as a temporary structure, in concrete, for the World Fair in 1940 but was recreated in stone in 1960 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator.

On each side there are carvings of fifteen prominent Portuguese, including poets, explorers, churchmen, mathematicians, scientists ...

I think Portugal is England's oldest ally. I'm not quite sure what difference that has made to the course of history, but they sure can do a good statue

This stipulated that there should be "an inviolable, eternal, solid, perpetual and true league of friendship, alliance and union" between the kingdoms.
It has never been violated and to this day Portugal is often described
as 'England's oldest ally'.
The alliance was further cemented by Joao's marriage to Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt ..."

Ellie: Done a bit more since, just discovered when we and Portugal became allies - 1386. I've written it all down once, it'll look a bit daft if I do it again.
