Jack
This is Jack, that's what he's called although it isn't his real name. He was selling poppies all day on 11th November last year outside St Thomas Church in Lymington.
He was there again this year and agreed that I could use this picture, although I think a little bemused and amused that I should want to, almost as if he couldn't see the reason why. What a remarkable man he is.

He looks like a perfect "specimen" for remembering, Ellie. You captured the look of remarkable.
Ellie: Thanks Ginnie, the picture shows much more than I'd hoped, which is why I used it ...
Nice picture. Those medals must be quite heavy to carry around.
Ellie: I doubt if he wears his medals more than a couple of times a year, they would be quite heavy but they're also very precious and it would be a tragedy if they were lost by whatever means.
very fine portrait, Ellie.
Ellie: Thanks Ray
A bit late but Welcome Back. This man had kind eyes. Nice portrait!
Ellie: Thanks Helen. You're right, there is something about his eyes, they're quite special.
I wish I had the confidence to ask to photograph people. This is great, Ellie. It makes me feel happy that he is still here, and sad because of what he must have endured. (:o)
Ellie: It really isn't something I do very often Ros, like you I don't often have the courage. When I first saw this picture though, I was pleased I'd captured what I saw and an element of far-seeing sadness in his eyes.
Lovely shot Ellie well done.
Ellie: Thanks Tracy
I'd love to know his story. He looks like quite a character.
Ellie: I'll try to find out more, if I do I'll add to this page.
Coooeeeeyyyy
Ellie: Oh brilliant, you're back online
He looks like a good guy to have a beer with. That chest full of medals surely translates into all sorts of crazy stories.
Ellie: I would imagine he has some stories to tell, but perhaps he'd be like my father in law and be reluctant to talk of his experiences. So many of them don't want to share what they saw and what they did, because somehow they feel guilty for surviving when so many of their friends didn't.
He is what the 11th is all about Ellie - and long may we remember what he and his generation did. Lovely intimate portrait that you will be really glad you took in a few years time. Excellent. David.
Ellie: He is what it's all about, isn't he. His generation, and their parents before them gave so much, and sadly are given so little in return.
I think I will be glad to have taken this picture, I'd never really thought that way though
Spectre of Montgomery? You sure it is not the man himself?
Great picture.
Ellie: No, it really isn't Monty, he's long gone but thankfully Jack is still with us.
Thanks Louis.
One of those medals is, I think, the distinguished service cross. Bottom row on the left. This portrait of Jack is one to keep safe for the future.
Ellie: Now you've got me, I've no idea which medal is which, I'll have to look them up. But I think you're absolutely right about the DSC.
Hmm, I'll have to try to find out a little more about this man, perhaps I should visit the local Legion Club?
This photo has remembered to me which it believed to have seen in your file. I have looked for, but I have not found it. I am wide-awake or I have dreamed it?
Ellie: You are right, he's here with other people

Nice portrait
Ellie: I must try to talk to him one day, he would tell a tale or two
