Robin - Erithacus rubecula

This is our Robin, Erithacus rubecula.

I think this is the male of the pair we have in our garden. He's quite a feisty little chap and will challenge any of the other small birds who dare to visit "his" bird table - which he defends in much the same way as folklore says they'll defend a Spindle Tree during the winter.

Robins each have their own territory during the winter, in spring they pair up and share their space. I presume doubling the area where they are able to get food for their young.

This little fellow is looking up at the bird table, working out how to get onto the cage containing the fat balls.

It would have been a nicer picture if there'd been a catchlight in his eye, I tried 'shopping one in, but it didn't look right.
